Featured Clinical Trials Supported by the National Cancer Institute
Today, hundreds of cancer clinical trials are under way in the United States. Clinical trials answer vital research questions that lead to better screening, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options for all cancers. This section highlights NCI-supported cancer trials featured in the NCI Cancer Bulletin and demonstrates the breadth of clinical cancer research supported by the NCI.
To find other cancer trials open to enrollment:
- Call the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) for information about trials all across the country. The call is toll-free and completely confidential.
- Use the basic PDQ search form to look online for trials listed in NCI's clinical trials database. The top of the form has a Help link for tips about searching for clinical trials.

6. Testing a New Drug in Advanced BRCA-related Cancer
(Posted: 09/08/2009) - In this clinical trial, women with advanced breast or ovarian cancer who carry a known BRCA gene mutation or who have a strong family history of these diseases (and are, therefore, likely to carry such a mutation) will be treated with a new drug called AZD2281 (olaparib) together with the chemotherapy drug carboplatin.
7. Refining Treatment for High-risk Early Stage Endometrial Cancer
(Posted: 08/14/2009) - In this clinical trial, women with high-risk early stage endometrial cancer will be randomly assigned following surgery to receive one of two types of adjuvant therapy: brachytherapy targeted to the vaginal cuff in combination with chemotherapy or standard pelvic external-beam radiotherapy.
8. Imaging the Extent of Prostate Cancer
(Posted: 06/02/2009, Updated: 07/31/2009) - In this clinical trial, researchers are testing PET scans using carbon-11 (C-11) acetate in conjunction with subsequent MRI to see if the resulting images allow better characterization of both the physical extent and the relative level of cellular growth of prostate tumors in patients known to have prostate cancer.
9. Comparing Second-Line Therapies for Advanced Lung Cancer
(Posted: 07/28/2009) - In this trial, patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer that has recurred or progressed after initial chemotherapy will be tested for EGFR gene amplification and then randomly assigned to receive either pemetrexed or erlotinib.
10. Combining Immunotoxin and Chemotherapy for Pleural Mesothelioma
(Posted: 07/14/2009) - In this trial, patients with inoperable epithelial pleural mesothelioma will be given SS1P immunotoxin in combination with pemetrexed and cisplatin to determine the maximum tolerated dose of SS1P and side effects profile in these patients.
